Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry

Many people experience anxiety at the thought of visiting the dentist. It can be helpful to know that this is very common, and that we are here to help. A lot of our patients have shared stories about traumatic events as children, being treated badly, and have described any number of terrifying implements. Thankfully dentistry has advanced well past those days, both as a science and a profession.

A New Type of Dentistry

Modern dentistry has evolved to boast superb, sophisticated technology that provides efficient and minimally invasive dental care. Modern dentistry also has a new approach: one that is patient centered.

The main focus of our dental practice is to keep our patients informed about what is happening in their mouth. We want to provide everything they need to make decisions about their own oral health and dental care. This new type of dentistry creates a far easier experience for patients of all ages: an interactive relationship, establishing trust and confidence. The end result is a comfortable and stress-free dental experience.

You Have Options!

In addition to these positive developments, there are options available to provide reassurance to patients who are apprehensive about coming to the dentist.

Sedation dentistry is a reliable tool, used by specially trained dentists in which a carefully measured amount of sedative medicine is administered to help create a calm experience at the dentist. We use different forms of sedation to help our patients in all aspects of dentistry, from cleanings to more complex procedures. There is a method of sedation that will help you feel relaxed, and enjoy your dental experience!

Have you been avoiding seeing a dentist because of fear or feeling anxious? Would you feel better about having sedation before a dental procedure such as a root canal or tooth extraction? Call us at (805) 496-4247 to speak with your local dentist in Westlake Village and find out how a trip to the dentist can be an easy, positive experience!

Beyond Anxiety: Medical Reasons for Sedation Dentistry

Before elaborating upon each type of sedation method, we would like to point out there are other reasons aside from anxiety where sedation dentistry is an appropriate choice:

  • You may have a sensitive gag reflex
  • You may have sensitive teeth
  • You may worry about remembering the procedure
  • The procedure might be lengthy or complex

If any of the reasons above have caused you to avoid the dentist, please consider the following alternatives:

Nitrous Oxide Also known as “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide reduces anxiety during dental treatment to gently dull the senses, reducing any perception of pain. Quick and safe, most patients will feel much more comfortable in just minutes, and it wears off rapidly without any lingering side effects.

Oral Sedation An anti-anxiety medication in the form of pills that are prescribed and taken before and/or during your procedure. You will remain conscious, calm, and aware of your surroundings, although most patients have a nap. It is usually a very relaxing experience for the anxious dental patient.

Oral sedation does require a friend or loved one to drive you to and from your appointment, so make sure to have arrangements in place ahead of your appointment!

IV Sedation (intravenous sedation) may be used to provide a sleep-like state for the patient. We work with a dental anaesthesiologist who can provide IV sedation for patients who require extensive restorative work, have medical conditions which may require it, or who prefer to be truly unconscious for their dental visit.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

We work hard to create a relaxing environment where any patient can feel comfortable, trusting and confident in their dental care. Sedation dentistry is a great technique to help our patients experience what that can feel like. In addition, we also find that patients who feel less anxious about visiting the office are much more motivated to maintain their oral health!
